The rules of writing

Today I taught the last class of my Introduction to Creative Writing. One thing I always do is ask the students to write down their three most important rules of writing. They do, then everyone reads their rules out loud.
And you? What are your three most important rules of writing?

  1. I had to really think about this one, Ed.
    1. Use your own voice.
    2. Engage your heart.
    3. Proofread, and then do it again.

  2. 1) Have fun with it.
    2) Take risks and experiment. Even if it doesn’t work out, you might find yourself traveling down a path you hadn’t considered.
    3) Be persistent with the writing and with yourself. Giving up is not an option.

  3. My three rules are:
    1. Work at my writing daily. Practice. Practice. Practice.
    2. Never be afaid to ask questions and to question what you have read or been told about writing.
    3. Persevere, never let your dream die, grow a thick skin and remember that good critcism helps you improve.
