Prison programs

Aristotle had a cure for psychological ills: “Art eases tension and heals the soul.” If Aristotle is right, why do our prisons rely solely on programs to help the incarcerated? Some programs do assist inmates, programs like anger management and violence prevention. But nothing else? No music? No painting? No theater? Writing is the only art I know of that is encouraged in our local federal prisons.
It seems to me that programs approach a person with the idea that they are sick or defective and need help. The arts, however, say, “You’re talented and we want to develop your talent.”
Our prisons do not present a balanced approach to changing lives.
