Unity

Every story, every article must have unity. I’ve seen countless wonderful articles wander into a completely different subject. (I’ve done it, too.)

Perhaps the author will start with the joy of backpacking in the wilderness, but the article changes into the story of Uncle Charlie who he went hiking with when he was much younger. For a short story or a novel chapter, the same. There should be unity of:

Theme

Pronoun

Tense

Mood

Attitude

Point of View
