1. Heroes are introduced in the ORDINARY WORLD, where
2. they receive the CALL TO ADVENTURE.
3. They are RELUCTANT at first or REFUSE THE CALL, but…
Our three steps for today…
4. But they are encouraged by a MENTOR to
5. CROSS THE FIRST THRESHOLD and enter the Special World, where
6. they encounter TESTS, ALLIES, AND ENEMIES.
*** STEP FOUR But they are encouraged by a MENTOR to
The mentor is a very popular figure in literature. Think of Obi Wan Kenobi, or Dorothy meeting the good witch. The mentor often gives the hero a gift, the light saber, the golden slippers etc.
The mentor encourages the hero and shows that the hero is humble enough to seek advice.
***STEP FIVE To CROSS THE FIRST THRESHOLD and enter the Special World, where
The hero takes the first step toward the adventure. The woman walks into her first writing class. Dorothy steps on the Yellow Brick Road. The adventure begins in earnest – like everything previous, Act I, has been loading the airplane and preparing it. Now we take off
It takes courage for the hero to take this step. Threshold Guardians try to stop the hero. The woman’s mother tells her to stay home and do her housework. This step is like jumping out of the airplane.
*** STEP SIX they encounter TESTS, ALLIES, AND ENEMIES.
Dorothy has to take the scarecrow down from his post, has to oil the tin man and reassure the lion. These people become her allies. Luke Skywalker goes into a bar where he meets Hans Solo. There are a lot of strange people and customs there.
“See, you got three or four good pals, why then you yourself a tribe – and there ain’t nothin’ stronger that that.” – Young Guns. In this step the “Dirty Dozen” are assembled to take on the destruction of a Nazi stronghold.
Testing — if Act 1 was college entrance exams, this is pop quizzes ( the mid-term and final are ahead).
