Slam Poetry

Recently a colleague of mine taught me about slam poetry. She was really teaching the guys in prison, but I listened carefully.

What fun it is. And how creative. It’s the opposite of everything formal. Many slam poets are familiar with hip-hop and with rap. I’m not, but that’s okay. Slam poetry is part presentation and part poetry, which is great for a ham actor like me.

But slam poetry can get ideas across to a wide range of people. It’s not meant for the literati and exclusive poetry circles. But it’s powerful, carries a message and a wonderful tool for us writers.

Check it out.
A good example is Teacher Taylor Mali on YouTube. Or just Google ‘how to write slam poetry’
