A Word Jockey

Maybe it should be a ‘Word Connoisseur.’ Or a ‘Word Specialist.’ ‘Word Jockey’ sounds too informal.

Whatever it’s called, I wish I were one. A person who studies words, chooses them with care, listens to their sounds and their connotations. We have all experienced books that we enjoyed mainly because of the style of the author, her use of words.

If I were an electrician like my father and grandfather, I wouldn’t say ‘gimme a pliers.’ I would know my tools and care for them. “Please hand me the needle nose.”

We writers should be the same. Love words.
