Beginnings

Study of the hero’s journey leads to some helpful ideas for the openings of our stories and articles:

•  In the opening there should be a symbol of the whole story, a hint at the theme – something that will answer the reader’s question “Why should I read this?”
• Raise the dramatic questions about the hero and the emotional questions
• Introduce the hero to the audience – the hero is like us— She must be relatable
• The hero’s lack –someone has died or the hero has a lack – e.g. can’t say I love you
• Maybe the hero has a tragic flaw – often superior people think they are above law
• Establish what’s at stake – make the stakes high
• Theme – what is the single idea of the story or article? Make first statement of theme
