“ A beginning is a very delicate time.” Dune
Study of the hero’s journey leads to some helpful ideas for the openings of our stories and articles:
- In the opening there should be a symbol of the whole story, a hint at the theme – something that will answer the reader’s question “Why should I read this?”
- Raise the dramatic questions about the hero and the emotional questions
- Introduce the hero to the audience – the hero is like us— She must be relatable
- The hero’s lack –someone has died or the hero has a lack – e.g. can’t say I love you
- Maybe the hero has a tragic flaw – often superior people think they are above law
- Establish what’s at stake – make the stakes high
- Theme – what is the single idea of the story or article? Make first statement of theme

You must be getting tired of me coming over here writing ‘Great stuff!’ all the time, Ed, but really your advice is so good.
Isn’t tht a great line from DUNE? (Frank Herbert, I think it is – or is that the Australian writer who wrote CAPRICORNIA? I always mix those two names up.)
Best,
Danielle.
Hey Ed
Trying to follow your advice, again! by writing an essay to submit to a nursing anthology.
Thanks

Ah. A note from #1 and best nurse. Good for you, a nursing anthology.

ED, Are we allowed to reblog things that belong to other writers as long as we credit them with the quotes? I didn’t know this.
Would you mind telling me how much we are allowed to reblog – is there some kind of upper limit? Would appreacieate your advice as I’ve only been on WordPress since August ’11. Seems there is much stll to learn.
Best,
Danielle
PS Thanks for your recent comment on my site.
Personally, I’m honored if people reblog my work. And I don’t feel there’s anything wrong with quoting others, as long as I give them credit. I did it twice in today’s blog. And sometimes, things have been said so often, that no one knows who started them. Like “Show, don’t tell”
I’m not an expert. Just my opinion.
