Yes You Can

magazineEvery one of us could write innumerable magazine articles.  As an experiment write down an article you could write about in each category. You know more than you think you know:

  • A personal experience e.g. I climbed Mt. Everest.
  • How to e.g. How to make bread
  • Technical
  • Inspiration
  • Humor
  • Opinion
  • Self Improvement                   article
  • Unusual People
  • Health
  • History
  • Travel
  • Romantic
  • This makes me mad
  • Religion
  • Money
  • Shopping
  • Raising children
  • Pets
  • Canada
  • Writing

Good. Now plan an article, find a magazine or paper that would like it, then (and only then) write the article.

You tried it. Did it work?

  1. This is a good post, I’ve never tried to write for Magazines before. Can I ask, what do you think is the best way to go about submitting work/approaching magazines?

    • good question. I think a query letter to the magazine is the way to start. “I’ve written a thousand word article on how to keep petunias from getting leggy before sale.” For a greenhouse magazine. Even if you haven’t written the article yet. Or you could say more truthfully that you are prepared to write such an article. Write the query letter, not the article. Something you’re interested in. To a magazine you know about. Check out their submission guidelines on the web. Good luck
