The Rules of Writing

What are your favorite rules of writing? Here are mine:

  • Prefer nouns and verbs to adjectives and adverbs
  • Use the active voice.
  • Put statements in a positive form.
  • Write to be understood, not to impress
  • Don’t overuse the verb “to be” (is) (was).
  • Conflict. Conflict. Conflict. Give us conflict. Hum-drum, everyday life we already got.
  • Read what you write—–out loud.

Our favorite rules of writing change over time. What are your favorite rules now? At least three.

    • I just thought of books I’d like to read. Something on Astronomy. I don’t need conflict there — Nature is always blowing up somewhere. So it doesn’t have to be artificially put in a story, you’re right there.
