the senses

My biggest struggle in writing is to include the senses. To see what my characters see, to feel, to taste, to touch and to smell. This is very important, so that the reader feels they are on scene. I make up silly rules for myself, e.g. in every chapter I write, someone must smell something. Any suggestions?

  1. Hi Ed,
I just make a conscious effort to try and add an extra layer to my prose after I’ve done the first draft ad I focus entirely on what my characters may be able to hear, taste and smell. I try to get into their skin.

    • Excellent. I start to do that and then I drift off into other kinds of editing, words, sentence structure etc. I like what you say about getting into the skin of your characters. Thank you.
